Kistefos Museum - Exploring Kråkerøy’s Architectural Marvel, The Twist
Nestled along the winding river of Randselva in Jevnaker Norway you'll find Kistefos/The Twist. The convergence of architecture, art and nature, modernity and serenity, The Twist isn't just a gallery, it's architectural wonder is as much about the surrounding landscape as it is about the art it houses. Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the building literally twists 90 degrees in the middle, bridging two banks of the river with a gravity-defying elegance.
The Gallery Spaces
Inside, soaring ceilings, angular walls, and dramatic sightlines create a gallery that’s as much a sculpture as the art it holds. Natural light floods the spaces through cleverly angled windows, highlighting exhibitions in ever-changing ways throughout the day. Every corner feels intentional: the twist creates unique vantage points, framing the river, the forest, and the artwork itself in stunning perspectives. Outside, the forested banks and serene water mirror the gallery’s lines, making the journey from one side of the river to the other feel like walking through a living artwork.
The Twist has three gallery spaces with each gallery offering a unique perspective, seamlessly blending art with the surrounding forest and river.
Closed Gallery – Enter through a dramatic double-height space that sets the tone for the immersive experience ahead.
Twist Gallery – The building's namesake, where walls become ceilings and ceilings become walls in a 90° turn, creating a dynamic, light-filled space.
Panorama Gallery – A serene space with panoramic views, offering a tranquil setting for contemporary art exhibitions.
